On New Year’s Eve something peculiar happened here in Southern California: It started to snow. In the early morning of December 31st, around 1 am, I was sitting by my fire watching The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo when I realized it was snowing outside. Now, this wasn’t the first time it had snowed here in sunny Southern California but it was the heaviest I have ever seen here. The cars and houses became covered in powder as a brisk wind blew the snow over everything. In the morning my neighborhood was jam-packed with traffic from people trying to get to the snow.
Like many of us, my friends and I had New Year’s Day free from work. So like any good gun lovers we decided to start off the new year shooting some new toys. We headed out to my friend’s private property, which still had a good amount of snow, with new guns in tow. I didn’t get any real time to get to know the guns but I spent enough time to get a quick feeling for how they ran.
Sig Sauer P227 Equinox: Wow, what a beast. Everyone in my group loved this gun. The ergonomics are awesome, the trigger is great, the recoil is smooth, and the accuracy is on point. If you get a chance try out a P227, you won’t be disappointed. The bi-tone rail is a unique plus as well.
Sig Sauer P938: Sig’s version of a pocket 1911 is a stylish, solid gun. No one seemed to talk much about it other than a “Meh,” mostly due to its felt recoil. The recoil honestly isn’t bad at all…but then again I’m the guy that likes shooting .40 S&W.
Remington 770, 7mm Magnum: This is a FUN gun to shoot, albeit expensive. The report from this gun was music to my ears as it rolled over the hills with a resounding thud. Definitely one of the most satisfying sounds in the shooting world. The recoil comes in the form of muzzle rise, but with the rubber buttstock there isn’t much felt recoil. I could shoot this rifle all day.
Mossberg 500: This wasn’t anything to new to the crew, but my friend recently acquired a new one. Always a fun gun to shoot with its smooth pump-action cycling. I would rater buy a Remington 870 as I prefer the way they feel in my hands, but the Mossberg 500 Cruiser with heatshield has been on my wishlist for years.
